World Music takes centre stage

The vibrant colour and spice of Bollywood, the Caribbean sounds of Steel Pans and the rhythm of Africa have been rocking audiences in a spectacular array of world music in the run up to the 40th Anniversary Harrogate International Festival.

As part of the 2006 Great Yorkshire Show, the Harrogate International Festival offered young visitors the opportunity to create dynamic sounds alongside world-class performers in a series of workshops celebrating world music.

Thousands of guests were then wowed with some up-tempo entertainment thanks to The Bollywood Band , The North Stars Steel Pans and Lamin and Tamala African salsa band.

The daily performances acted as an opener for a star-studded world music line up at the Festival's 40th Anniversary, which runs from July 20 - August 4. This year's stars include chart topping guitar sensation José González, the hot Latin salsa sounds of The Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Mexican fusion of Los De Abajo - winners of the BBC World Music Award.

As well as a feast of world music, the Festival will play host to the biggest names from the genres of Jazz and Classical, including legendary pianist Alfred Brendel, Yorkshire jazz sensation, Claire Teal, Dame Felicity Lott and the stunning Belcea String Quartet.

As well as offering the very best in musical performers, the 40th Anniversary Festival promises wide-ranging entertainment in the shape of outdoor theatre, street theatre and a continental market.

Tickets can be purchased at hotline on (01423) 537230 or visit the Festival Town Centre Box Office by the Cenotaph Harrogate town centre - which opens this weekend!
