Selby African Drumming Workshops 23 - 27th October 2006

Here come the drums…

Young people in Selby got a flavour of Africa in their half term, as they learnt to play djembe drums, percussion and traditional African singing with master-drummer Lamin Jassey.

The week was spent at the Selby United Reform Church, learning how to play the instruments, creating dances and mastering new songs. The tunes were traditional Gambian and Senegalese pieces, comprising haunting songs and vibrant rhythms.

The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the final performance at the Tate & Lyle Sports and Social Club, when all the participants came together for one spectacular show. The rhythmical playing, beautiful singing and lively dancing impressed parents, councillors, guests and the local MP.

To round the week off, there was a party in honour of Youth Music Action Zone Week, where the star was definitely the enormous cake! It was a fitting end to a very exciting week, and also a taster of more projects to come in Selby. Watch this space!
