Following this in style on Sunday 5 February, the Pavão String Quartet, recognised as the most exciting string quartet in the UK, will present a varied programme, including works written by Britten, Haydn and Mendelssohn. This versatile ensemble is not only highly-regarded in classical concert venues, they have also enjoyed collaborations with renowned rock, pop and jazz artists, a contemporary dance company, and they have even recorded music for the X-Factor!

Pianist Martin Roscoe will next grace the Old Swan’s stage with a programme of Schubert, Beethoven and Schumann on Sunday 19 February, followed by clarinettist Julian Bliss on Sunday 18 March, with a vibrant performance that will not fail to impress. The series will finally be brought to a triumphant close on Sunday 15 April with one of Britain’s foremost and best loved cellists, Paul Watkins.

The Global Villages Workshops, led by traditional musicians and multi-instrumentalists Heel Grove, will take participants on a journey across Scotland, giving them opportunities to experience the different traditions throughout the country from the Islands to Highlands!  Children will learn and write folk songs, create soundscapes to represent different parts of Scotland, listen to the stories and legends of the country, and of course have a go at Ceillidh dancing!

The workshops will round off with a short performance by the workshop participants for their families and friends, giving a platform for them to showcase their new skills.

The Global Villages Workshops are delivered by North Yorkshire Youth Music Action Zone (NYMAZ) and the Harrogate International Festivals.

After winning first place at the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition in 1990, marking the beginning of his international career, Portuguese born pianist Artur Pizarro has since taken the world by storm with his breath-taking performances. Summer Festival Review

The 2011 Festival was a resounding success with new developments and audiences created through the delivery of a Children’s Festival, the Spiegeltent and emerging Fringe Festival. The Summer Festival took on a new format over long-weekends with many sold-out events throughout the season and wonderful feedback from new audiences:

It is with this firm foundation that we build our Festival’s offer for the year ahead and 2012 is certainly a year to celebrate, with the London Olympic Games and the exciting news that the Olympic Torch is coming through Harrogate, while the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee also promises great excitement.

The Summer Festival programme will reflect the celebratory feel and will be packed with world-class acts. As well as the usual high-quality performances from international artists, 2012 hopes to see the return of the magical mirrored Spiegeltent, which caused such as stir when it landed in Harrogate’s Crescent Gardens last July.

Harrogate International Festivals is proud to boast a diverse range of community and education projects deriving from both our music and literature Festivals through our ReachOut programme.
We believe that music and the arts have the power to change lives and empower young people. Working with disadvantaged young people is an important priority and thousands of young people have participated in our ReachOut programmes.
From DJ-ing to dhol drumming, singing to sporting poetry, Ga chants to gadget design, we bring internationally acclaimed artists and authors to engage with young people in music and literature activities of the highest quality.

Musical Mums

Our innovative weekly singing project for teenage mums and their babies is now celebrating its 5th year. Singing is proven to help bond mum and baby, in addition to assisting speech, numeracy and literacy in early years development.
Our partners include NHS midwives and SureStart, who support the mums  – who may have been initially attracted by the singing -  to access a variety of support services that are not traditionally used by teenage mums due to isolation, fear, finances and a lack of parental support.
Over 20 mums and their babies now access the singing project with many mums now back in education and being taught to lead the singing sessions themselves.

Global Villages

Bringing the World to the Doorstep of the District!
Our touring world music projects work in areas of rural isolation across the district to ensure that Harrogate International Festivals maintains its commitment to delivering across Harrogate and the wider area.
This half-term project has now toured nearly every village hall across the District in the last 4 years, and we’re delighted with the warm welcome from the local communities for our international artists, who provide rare opportunities for communities in rural areas to engage with diverse cultural experiences.

Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival

Since being established in 2003, the Crime Writing Festival has programmed 353 authors, worked with 276 aspiring writers, and welcomed 59,152 audience members.  Over the four days of the Festival over 1,500 rooms are taken in hotels across Harrogate, with accomodation package bookings taken directly at the Harrogate International Festivals Office throughout the year.

The Festival has an economic impact of £2m, which contributes to the overall Harrogate International Festivals £4.1m economic impact to the Harrogate District, and puts Harrogate firmly on the map by attracting internationally bestselling authors and having a firm place in the national literary calendar.

Thanks to the global names it attracts, from Lee Child to Martina Cole, the Festival also generates huge media coverage. From the on-going support of the local Harrogate Advertiser and Yorkshire Post, to national features and online blogs in The Times, The Telegraph, The Independent and The Guardian, the Festival creates significant media profile for the town, the Festivals and the award-winning partnership with T&R Theakston Ltd.

Next year’s Festival will take place on the 19-22 July 2012. To celebrate the 10th year of the ‘biggest & best festival of its kind anywhere in the world’, 2012 Programming Chair, Mark Billingham, has put together an astounding line-up of authors, with Jo Nesbo (pictured), Harlan Coben, John Connolly and Charlaine Harris announced as Special Guests for next year.

Back by popular demand, Global Villages will return to North Yorkshire this October for another half term of fun World Music Workshops. Global Villages is Harrogate International Festivals’ flagship music project, bringing global music and culture to rural areas. Past projects have included traditional Brazilian music, flamenco dancing, African drumming, classical Indian music, samba drumming and Javanese gamelan.

Workshops are aimed at 7-12 year olds and take place over a half term holiday, with one day-long workshop happening in four different locations around Harrogate & District.The workshops are always extremely popular so make sure you book early to secure your place and make sure you don’t miss out!

This October we’re delighted to welcome UNIT SIX to North Yorkshire, an exciting percussion duo who will introduce you to a fascinating array of percussion instruments from across the globe!
