Since winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year award in 1984, Emma Johnson has found a place in the hearts of British audiences and is one of the few clarinettists in the world to have forged an international career.   Emma’s superb playing and innate musicality have led her to perform as soloist with many leading international orchestras, as well as making highly acclaimed recordings, such as a disc of Mozart’s works to celebrate the composer’s 250th anniversary.   She also works with contemporary composers, and enjoys performing works written for her by jazz legend John Dankworth.

Emma’s love of both traditional and contemporary music is shown in her recital programme, combining the lush harmonies of Brahms’ 2nd Sonata with the elegance of the Variations by Mozart.  Bernstein’s Sonata is rarely performed, and highlights the jazz character of the instrument.  Emma’s own arrangement of the Chopin Fantasy Impromptu brings the 2008 Sunday Series to a virtuosic close.
