Grandmother’s Tales Op. 31
Toccata Op. 11
Sonata No. 7 in Bb Op. 83 ‘Stalingrad’
Since his BBC Proms debut in 2004, Simon Trpceski has enjoyed an international career, performing with major orchestras including The New York Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw and London Philharmonic Orchestras.
Born in Macedonia, Trpceski rose to fame in the UK as a BBC New Generation Artist in 2001 – 2003, and is now a favourite of audiences around the country. He has performed extensively in the UK appearing at the Wigmore Hall seven times, with a sell-out performance on his latest visit.
A wide-ranging programme is framed by two dark and brooding sonatas; Chopin’s 2nd Sonata, which contains the famous ‘Funeral March’ that was played at Chopin’s graveside and the immensely powerful Stalingrad Sonata by Prokofiev. Children’s Corner provides a lighter note including humorous, witty pieces such as ‘Golliwogg’s Cake-walk’ and ‘Dr Gradus ad Parnassum’, with many quotations and jibes at other composers. Prokofiev’s powerful Sonata is complemented by a rarely performed early work, Grandmother’s Tales and the breathtaking Toccata.
