Born into a musical family and fascinated by the cello from an early age, it seems Raphael Wallfisch was destined for a life in music. Since winning the Gaspar Cassado International Cello Competition in Florence at the age of twenty-four, Wallfisch has enjoyed a world-wide career playing with orchestras including the BBC Symphony, Hallé, City of Birmingham Symphony Leipzig Gewandhaus, Berlin Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic and many others. He is a great champion of British cello concerti and many contemporary British composers, including Peter Maxwell Davies, John Tavener and James MacMillan, have written works for him.
Brahms and Beethoven’s sonatas are core works in the cello repertoire, still challenging players technically and emotionally. Passionate and powerful, their virtuosity and depth of feeling still entrance today. Complementing these works are the Four Pieces by English composer, Frank Bridge, and the wild Eastern European flavours of Bartòk’s stunning Rhapsody No. 1.
